GeForce RTX 3060 vs GeForce RTX 3080

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3060 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1320 MHz, and the (Unknown) MB of GDDR6 RAM runs at 1875 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is made up of 3584 Stream Processors, 112 Texture Address Units, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 3080, which uses a 8 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1440 MHz. The GDDR6X RAM works at a frequency of 1188 MHz on this particular model. It features 8704 SPUs as well as 272 TAUs and 96 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 3060 170 Watts
GeForce RTX 3080 320 Watts
Difference: 150 Watts (88%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 3080 should be 111% quicker than the GeForce RTX 3060 overall, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 778547 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 368640 MB/sec
Difference: 409907 (111%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 is much (approximately 165%) more effective at AF than the GeForce RTX 3060. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 391680 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 147840 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 243840 (165%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 is quite a bit (approximately 118%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce RTX 3060, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 138240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3060 63360 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 74880 (118%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
