GeForce 9800 GT 1GB vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GT 1GB makes use of a 65/55 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 600 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 900 MHz on this particular card. It features 112 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this specific model. It features 5120 SPUs along with 320 TAUs and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 105 Watts
Radeon RX 6900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 195 Watts (186%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6900 XT, in theory, should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 9800 GT 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 466688 (810%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT will be much (approximately 1638%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9800 GT 1GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 550400 (1638%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6900 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 224000 (2333%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
