Radeon R5 M230 vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon R5 M230 has a GPU clock speed of 780 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which has a clock frequency of 1825 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 2000 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It is comprised of 5120 SPUs, 320 Texture Address Units, and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should in theory perform much faster than the Radeon R5 M230 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 508288 (3177%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT is quite a bit (more or less 3644%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M230. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 568400 (3644%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT is quite a bit (approximately 7387%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M230, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 230480 (7387%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
