GeForce RTX 3090 vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3090 features core clock speeds of 1395 MHz on the GPU, and 1219 MHz on the 24576 MB of GDDR6X RAM. It features 10496 SPUs as well as 328 Texture Address Units and 112 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM runs at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this specific card. It features 5120 SPUs along with 320 Texture Address Units and 128 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 300 Watts
GeForce RTX 3090 350 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (17%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 3090 will be 83% faster than the Radeon RX 6900 XT overall, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3090 958668 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
Difference: 434380 (83%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should be quite a bit (more or less 28%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce RTX 3090. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3090 457560 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 126440 (28%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6900 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3090 156240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 77360 (50%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
