Radeon R9 M380 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 M380 comes with core clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 memory works at a speed of 2000 MHz on this model. It features 4608 SPUs along with 288 TAUs and 128 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 6800 XT should in theory be much better than the Radeon R9 M380 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 428288 (446%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT is much (about 1214%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M380. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 485600 (1214%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT will be much (about 1360%) better at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M380, and able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 217600 (1360%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
