Radeon RX 6800 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 features a clock speed of 1700 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 2000 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It features 3840 SPUs, 240 TAUs, and 96 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which features a clock speed of 1825 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 2000 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It features 4608 SPUs, 288 Texture Address Units, and 128 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Radeon RX 6800 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (20%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same bandwidth, so in theory they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT is quite a bit (more or less 29%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 6800. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 117600 (29%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT is much (more or less 43%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon RX 6800, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 70400 (43%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
