Radeon RX 6800 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 features a GPU core speed of 1700 MHz, and the 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory is set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 3840 SPUs, 240 Texture Address Units, and 96 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which has clock speeds of 1825 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 4608 SPUs along with 288 TAUs and 128 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Radeon RX 6800 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (20%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT will be quite a bit (about 29%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 6800. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 117600 (29%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT should be a lot (more or less 43%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon RX 6800, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 70400 (43%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
