Radeon RX 470 4GB vs Radeon RX 6800

Intro

The Radeon RX 470 4GB has core clock speeds of 926 MHz on the GPU, and 1650 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6800, which features GPU core speed of 1700 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 3840 Stream Processors, 240 TAUs, and 96 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 6800 should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon RX 470 4GB in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
Difference: 313088 (148%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 is quite a bit (about 244%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 470 4GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 289472 (244%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 should be much (approximately 451%) more effective at AA than the Radeon RX 470 4GB, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 133568 (451%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
