GeForce GTX 1070 vs GeForce RTX 3090

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1070 features core clock speeds of 1506 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1920 SPUs along with 120 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce RTX 3090, which comes with GPU core speed of 1395 MHz, and 24576 MB of GDDR6X memory running at 1219 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 10496 SPUs, 328 TAUs, and 112 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTX 1070 150 Watts
GeForce RTX 3090 350 Watts
Difference: 200 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce RTX 3090 should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3090 958668 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 262144 MB/sec
Difference: 696524 (266%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3090 will be a lot (about 153%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 1070. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3090 457560 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 180720 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 276840 (153%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3090 will be a lot (approximately 62%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GTX 1070, and should be able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3090 156240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1070 96384 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 59856 (62%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
