GeForce RTX 2070 vs GeForce RTX 3090

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2070 comes with a GPU core speed of 1410 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory is set to run at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2304 SPUs, 144 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 3090, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1395 MHz, and 24576 MB of GDDR6X memory set to run at 1219 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 10496 SPUs, 328 Texture Address Units, and 112 ROPs.

GeForce RTX 2070 175 Watts
GeForce RTX 3090 350 Watts
Difference: 175 Watts (100%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 3090 should in theory be a lot faster than the GeForce RTX 2070 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3090 958668 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 2070 458752 MB/sec
Difference: 499916 (109%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3090 is much (approximately 125%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce RTX 2070. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3090 457560 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 2070 203040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 254520 (125%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3090 should be much (about 73%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce RTX 2070, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3090 156240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 2070 90240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 66000 (73%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
