GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER vs Radeon HD 7790

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER has a GPU clock speed of 1650 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory runs at 1937 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 3072 SPUs, 192 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 7790, which has GPU core speed of 1000 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 896 Stream Processors, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Radeon HD 7790 85 Watts
GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 250 Watts
Difference: 165 Watts (194%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 7790 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 507904 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7790 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 411904 (429%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is quite a bit (approximately 466%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7790. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 316800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 56000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 260800 (466%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 105600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 89600 (560%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
