GeForce 825M vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The GeForce 825M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 850 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a speed of 900 MHz on this specific model. It features 384 SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which features a clock frequency of 1717 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It features 1408 SPUs, 88 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 825M 33 Watts
Radeon RX 5500 XT 130 Watts
Difference: 97 Watts (294%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 5500 XT is 1493% faster than the GeForce 825M in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
GeForce 825M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 214976 (1493%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT should be quite a bit (more or less 1011%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 825M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 825M 13600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 137496 (1011%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 825M 6800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 48144 (708%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
