GeForce GTX 860M vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M has a core clock speed of 797 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1152 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which features a clock speed of 1717 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It features 1408 SPUs, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 860M 45 Watts
Radeon RX 5500 XT 130 Watts
Difference: 85 Watts (189%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 5500 XT is 258% quicker than the GeForce GTX 860M overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 165376 (258%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT should be a lot (approximately 97%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 860M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 74584 (97%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 42192 (331%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
