GeForce GTX 860M vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M features core speeds of 797 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1152 SPUs as well as 96 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1717 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1408 SPUs, 88 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 5500 XT should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce GTX 860M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 165376 (258%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT will be a lot (approximately 97%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 860M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 74584 (97%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5500 XT is superior to the GeForce GTX 860M, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 42192 (331%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
