GeForce 930M vs Radeon RX 5600 XT

Intro

The GeForce 930M has a GPU core speed of 928 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5600 XT, which has core speeds of 1375 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 6144 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5600 XT should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 930M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 344064 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 329664 (2289%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 XT will be quite a bit (more or less 789%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 930M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 198000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 175728 (789%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5600 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 XT 88000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 80576 (1085%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
