GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon RX 5600

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M features a GPU core clock speed of 944 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 5600, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1375 MHz. The GDDR6 memory is set to run at a speed of 1500 MHz on this model. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 64 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
