GeForce RTX 2060 Super vs Radeon R9 285

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2060 Super has clock speeds of 1470 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 2176 SPUs along with 136 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 285, which features a clock frequency of 918 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1375 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 1792 SPUs, 112 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon R9 285 190 Watts
Difference: 15 Watts (9%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 2060 Super should in theory be much faster than the Radeon R9 285 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2060 Super 458752 MB/sec
Radeon R9 285 176000 MB/sec
Difference: 282752 (161%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2060 Super should be a lot (about 94%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 285. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2060 Super 199920 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 285 102816 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 97104 (94%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2060 Super is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2060 Super 94080 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 285 29376 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 64704 (220%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
