Radeon R5 M230 vs Radeon RX 560

Intro

The Radeon R5 M230 comes with a GPU clock speed of 780 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 320 Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 560, which features a clock speed of 1175 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 14 nm design. It features 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 560 should perform much faster than the Radeon R5 M230 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 560 114688 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 98688 (617%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 560 will be much (approximately 382%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M230. (explain)

Radeon RX 560 75200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 59600 (382%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 560 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 560 18800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15680 (503%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
