Radeon R7 M265 vs Radeon RX 560

Intro

The Radeon R7 M265 features a GPU core clock speed of 725 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 560, which comes with a core clock frequency of 1175 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 14 nm design. It is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 560 should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon R7 M265 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 560 114688 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 82688 (258%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 560 should be a lot (approximately 332%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M265. (explain)

Radeon RX 560 75200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 57800 (332%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 560 is quite a bit (about 224%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon R7 M265, and able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 560 18800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13000 (224%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
