GeForce GTX 1660 Ti vs GeForce GTX 980

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti comes with a core clock speed of 1500 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 1500 MHz. It also makes use of a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 12 nm design. It features 1536 SPUs, 96 TAUs, and 48 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 980, which features core speeds of 1126 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce GTX 980 165 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (38%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti will be 32% faster than the GeForce GTX 980 in general, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 294912 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 980 224000 MB/sec
Difference: 70912 (32%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980 is a small bit (approximately 0%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 144128 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 144000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 128 (0%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980 is a small bit (more or less 0%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, and should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 72064 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 72000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 64 (0%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
