GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 vs GeForce RTX 2060

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 uses a 80 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 540 MHz. The DDR2 RAM works at a speed of 400 MHz on this particular model. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce RTX 2060, which makes use of a 12 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 1365 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a speed of 1750 MHz on this particular model. It features 1920 SPUs along with 120 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
