GeForce RTX 2060 vs Radeon HD 7790

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2060 makes use of a 12 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1365 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM runs at a speed of 1750 MHz on this specific model. It features 1920 SPUs as well as 120 TAUs and 48 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 7790, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1000 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1500 MHz on this particular model. It features 896 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7790 85 Watts
GeForce RTX 2060 160 Watts
Difference: 75 Watts (88%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 2060 should in theory perform much faster than the Radeon HD 7790 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2060 344064 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7790 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 248064 (258%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2060 should be quite a bit (more or less 193%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 7790. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2060 163800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 56000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 107800 (193%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 2060 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2060 65520 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7790 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 49520 (310%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
