Radeon R9 M370X vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The Radeon R9 M370X comes with a core clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 550, which comes with clock speeds of 1100 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 550 should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M370X overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 42688 (59%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 550 should be a small bit (approximately 10%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R9 M370X. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3200 (10%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 550 is much (more or less 38%) more effective at AA than the Radeon R9 M370X, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4800 (38%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
