Radeon HD 6950 2GB vs Radeon RX 570

Intro

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB features core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 570, which features a clock frequency of 1168 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 14 nm design. It features 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon RX 570 150 Watts
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (33%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon RX 570 should in theory be much superior to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 570 229376 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
Difference: 69376 (43%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 570 will be much (approximately 112%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 6950 2GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 570 149504 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 79104 (112%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 570 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 570 37376 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11776 (46%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
