Radeon HD 6750 vs Radeon RX 460

Intro

The Radeon HD 6750 makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 725 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 720 SPUs along with 36 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 460, which has a clock speed of 1090 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 14 nm design. It features 896 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 460 75 Watts
Radeon HD 6750 86 Watts
Difference: 11 Watts (15%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 460 should in theory be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 6750 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 112000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6750 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (75%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 460 will be a lot (about 134%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6750. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 61040 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 26100 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 34940 (134%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 460 is quite a bit (more or less 50%) better at FSAA than the Radeon HD 6750, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 17440 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5840 (50%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
