GeForce 830M vs Radeon RX 460

Intro

The GeForce 830M has a GPU core speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 256 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 460, which makes use of a 14 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1090 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1750 MHz on this specific model. It features 896 SPUs along with 56 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
Radeon RX 460 75 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (200%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 460 should theoretically be a lot better than the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 112000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 97600 (678%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 460 is quite a bit (about 271%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 61040 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44576 (271%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 460 will be quite a bit (more or less 112%) better at FSAA than the GeForce 830M, and will be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 17440 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9208 (112%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
