Radeon R5 M255 vs Radeon RX 460 2GB

Intro

The Radeon R5 M255 features clock speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 460 2GB, which has core speeds of 1090 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 896 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 460 2GB should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 2GB 112000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 96000 (600%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 460 2GB will be quite a bit (about 225%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 2GB 61040 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 42240 (225%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 460 2GB is superior to the Radeon R5 M255, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 2GB 17440 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9920 (132%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
