Radeon R9 M390X vs Radeon RX 470

Intro

The Radeon R9 M390X comes with a clock speed of 723 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1250 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 470, which has a clock frequency of 926 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1650 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 14 nm design. It is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 470 120 Watts
Radeon R9 M390X 125 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (4%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 470 should be 32% quicker than the Radeon R9 M390X in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 211200 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 160000 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (32%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 should be quite a bit (more or less 28%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M390X. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 118528 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 92544 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 25984 (28%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 is superior to the Radeon R9 M390X, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 29632 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M390X 23136 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6496 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
