Radeon R9 M290X vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The Radeon R9 M290X makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 850 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1200 MHz on this particular card. It features 1280 SPUs along with 80 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which has clock speeds of 926 MHz on the GPU, and 1650 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 470 4GB should theoretically be a lot better than the Radeon R9 M290X overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M290X 153600 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (38%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should be quite a bit (approximately 74%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M290X. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M290X 68000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 50528 (74%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB will be a small bit (more or less 9%) better at FSAA than the Radeon R9 M290X, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M290X 27200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2432 (9%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
