GeForce 830M vs Radeon RX 470 4GB

Intro

The GeForce 830M comes with core speeds of 1029 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 256 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 470 4GB, which uses a 14 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 926 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1650 MHz on this model. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon RX 470 4GB 120 Watts
Difference: 95 Watts (380%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 470 4GB should theoretically be much faster than the GeForce 830M in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 211200 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 196800 (1367%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 470 4GB will be quite a bit (about 620%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 118528 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 102064 (620%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 470 4GB is superior to the GeForce 830M, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 470 4GB 29632 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21400 (260%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
