GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB vs Radeon R9 M395X

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB comes with a GPU core speed of 513 MHz, and the 320 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 792 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 20 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M395X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 723 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1250 MHz on this specific card. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 M395X 125 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 143 Watts
Difference: 18 Watts (14%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M395X should be 153% faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 96640 (153%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X is quite a bit (about 276%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 67920 (276%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X will be a lot (more or less 125%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB, and will be able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12876 (125%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
