Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M395X should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 129600 (426%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X should be much (more or less 2792%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 89344 (2792%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X is much (about 623%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19936 (623%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
