GeForce 920M vs Radeon R9 M395X

Intro

The GeForce 920M has core speeds of 954 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M395X, which comes with a clock frequency of 723 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1250 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M395X should perform much faster than the GeForce 920M overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 145600 (1011%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X should be a lot (approximately 203%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 62016 (203%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X should be quite a bit (about 203%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce 920M, and able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15504 (203%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
