GeForce GT 310 vs Radeon R9 M390X

Intro

The GeForce GT 310 makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 589 MHz. The DDR2 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M390X, which features GPU core speed of 723 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce GT 310 31 Watts
Radeon R9 M390X 125 Watts
Difference: 94 Watts (303%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 M390X should in theory be a lot better than the GeForce GT 310 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 310 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 144000 (900%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M390X should be a lot (more or less 1864%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 310. (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 92544 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 310 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 87832 (1864%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M390X should be a lot (about 882%) better at FSAA than the GeForce GT 310, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M390X 23136 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 310 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20780 (882%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
