GeForce GT 340 1GB vs Radeon R9 M385X

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 1GB has a GPU core speed of 550 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 850 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 96 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M385X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1500 MHz on this model. It features 896 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M385X should theoretically be a lot faster than the GeForce GT 340 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M385X 96000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (76%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M385X is much (approximately 250%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 340 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M385X 61600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44000 (250%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M385X is superior to the GeForce GT 340 1GB, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M385X 17600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13200 (300%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
