Radeon HD 3870 1GB vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon HD 3870 1GB uses a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 775 MHz. The GDDR4 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this specific model. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M380, which has clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M380 should be 33% quicker than the Radeon HD 3870 1GB in general, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3870 1GB 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 24000 (33%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 should be quite a bit (more or less 223%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 3870 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3870 1GB 12400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 27600 (223%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 will be quite a bit (about 29%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 3870 1GB, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3870 1GB 12400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3600 (29%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
