Radeon HD 5830 vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon HD 5830 has clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1120(224x5) SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M380, which has core speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 5830 should theoretically be a lot faster than the Radeon R9 M380 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5830 128000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 32000 (33%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5830 should be just a bit (more or less 12%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M380. (explain)

Radeon HD 5830 44800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4800 (12%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is quite a bit (more or less 25%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon HD 5830, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5830 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
