Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M380, which comes with GPU core speed of 1000 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M380 is 50% quicker than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 32000 (50%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is a lot (more or less 108%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 20800 (108%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 will be much (about 150%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9600 (150%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
