Radeon HD 7850 vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon HD 7850 comes with a GPU core speed of 860 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1200 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M380, which features clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 7850 is 60% quicker than the Radeon R9 M380 overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 7850 153600 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (60%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7850 is much (about 38%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M380. (explain)

Radeon HD 7850 55040 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15040 (38%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7850 is superior to the Radeon R9 M380, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 7850 27520 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11520 (72%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
