Radeon R5 M330 vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The Radeon R5 M330 has a core clock speed of 1030 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M380, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M380 should be a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M330 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 81600 (567%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 will be quite a bit (about 94%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19400 (94%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M380 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7760 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
