Radeon R9 290 vs Radeon R9 M375X

Intro

The Radeon R9 290 comes with core clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M375X, which has GPU core speed of 1015 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 290 should be 344% quicker than the Radeon R9 M375X in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 290 320000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 248000 (344%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 290 will be a lot (approximately 215%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M375X. (explain)

Radeon R9 290 128000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 40600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 87400 (215%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 290 will be quite a bit (approximately 215%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M375X, and should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R9 290 51200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 16240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 34960 (215%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
