Radeon R9 380 2G vs Radeon R9 M375X

Intro

The Radeon R9 380 2G has core speeds of 970 MHz on the GPU, and 1425 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1792 SPUs as well as 112 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M375X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1015 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1125 MHz on this particular card. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 380 2G, in theory, should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M375X overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 2G 182400 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 110400 (153%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 380 2G should be quite a bit (more or less 168%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M375X. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 2G 108640 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 40600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 68040 (168%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 380 2G is superior to the Radeon R9 M375X, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 380 2G 31040 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 16240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14800 (91%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
