GeForce 940M vs Radeon R9 M375X

Intro

The GeForce 940M comes with core clock speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M375X, which features core clock speeds of 1015 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M375X should be 350% quicker than the GeForce 940M in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M375X should be much (approximately 58%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 40600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14872 (58%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M375X is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 16240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7664 (89%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
