Radeon HD 3470 512MB vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3470 512MB comes with a GPU core clock speed of 800 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 950 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 40(8x5) SPUs, 4 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M365X, which features a clock speed of 925 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 M365X should in theory be a lot superior to the Radeon HD 3470 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (137%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X should be much (approximately 1056%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 33800 (1056%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X should be a lot (approximately 363%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11600 (363%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
