Radeon HD 4550 512MB vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4550 512MB has a clock speed of 600 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 800 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It is comprised of 80(16x5) SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M365X, which features core speeds of 925 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the Radeon R9 M365X should in theory be a lot superior to the Radeon HD 4550 512MB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 59200 (463%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X is much (about 671%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4550 512MB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 4800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 32200 (671%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 2400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12400 (517%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
