Radeon HD 7870 XT vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon HD 7870 XT has core clock speeds of 925 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1536 SPUs as well as 96 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M365X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 925 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this model. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 7870 XT should theoretically be much better than the Radeon R9 M365X overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 192000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 120000 (167%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7870 XT should be much (approximately 140%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R9 M365X. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 88800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 51800 (140%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7870 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 29600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14800 (100%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
