Radeon R7 M265 vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon R7 M265 comes with core clock speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M365X, which has a core clock frequency of 925 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 M365X should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R7 M265 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 40000 (125%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X is quite a bit (about 113%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M265. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19600 (113%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9000 (155%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
