GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 has a GPU clock speed of 625 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM is set to run at 1012 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 48 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 M360, which features GPU clock speed of 1125 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 384 Stream Processors, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R7 M360 in general. (explain)

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 32384 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 16384 (102%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 is quite a bit (more or less 170%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17000 (170%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R7 M360 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4000 (80%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
