GeForce GT 440 3GB vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 594 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 900 MHz on this particular model. It features 144 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M360, which comes with a core clock frequency of 1125 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 440 3GB is 170% faster than the Radeon R7 M360 in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 27200 (170%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M360 should be a lot (more or less 89%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 12744 (89%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GT 440 3GB will be a lot (approximately 58%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon R7 M360, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5256 (58%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
