GeForce GTX 980M vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce GTX 980M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 1038 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 1536 SPUs along with 96 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M360, which features core clock speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 980M should be much faster than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 128000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 112000 (700%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980M should be quite a bit (approximately 269%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 99648 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 72648 (269%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 980M is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980M 66432 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 57432 (638%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
