Radeon HD 4790 vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The Radeon HD 4790 makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 600 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 800 MHz on this particular model. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M330, which has GPU core speed of 1030 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM running at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 4790 should in theory be a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M330 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 88000 (611%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M330 will be a bit (approximately 7%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 4790. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1400 (7%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4790 is a better choice, not by a very large margin though. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1360 (17%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
